A Kenley primary school has achieved a second architectural award.

The Hayes Primary School in Hayes Lane, was crowned overall winner in the New London Awards 2013.

The school was recently extended and modernised by the council, which appointed architects Hayhurst and Co to create an imaginative yet practical new building.

The £3m investment created six new classrooms and increased the school's capacity to 60 pupils in each year group. The project also created an inner courtyard for children to play in.

The awards, run by London's Centre for the Built Environment, recognise the best in architecture, planning and development in the capital.

Councillor Tim Pollard, cabinet member for children, families and learning, said: "Our main priority is to make sure we have enough places so that every child in Croydon has the chance of a good education.

"When we also have to ability to deliver creative schemes like this one and get such great recognition that is an added bonus."
