A Wandsworth street which generated more than a quarter of a million pounds in parking tickets has been named as one of most ticketed roads in the country.

Last year 5,652 parking tickets were handed out in Garratt Lane, which runs from Wandsworth to Tooting.

The monster haul generated more than £268,837 over a 12 month period, placing it ninth in a list of the country's most lucrative roads bring in a whopping £737 per day.

In February, the Wandsworth Guardian exclusively revealed Wandsworth Council's had raked in more than £25m in parking fees over the past year, according to new figures.

The data, provided by the Institute for Advanced Motorists (IAM), show the council’s parking profits have increased by 11 per cent.

The most costly area for illegal parking was Chiswick High Road in Hounslow, west London, where the council took £634,704 from 13,132 tickets.

Birmingham's Alum Rock Road was the highest earner outside London with £252,024 from 7,527 tickets.

Nationwide, eight million parking tickets were dispatched, equating to a ticket every four seconds and generating £270m in fines.

6. Westminster City Council - Great Marlborough St - 6,021 tickets - £358,775.

7. Tower Hamlets Council - Hackney Road - 5,480 tickets - £313,652.

8. Southwark Council - Rye Lane - 4,069 tickets - £309,716.

9. Wandsworth Council - Garratt Lane - 5,652 tickets - £268,837.
