The struggling bee population has been given a helping hand with the creation of two ‘bee worlds’.

Seeds have been sown for two bee friendly environments along Willow Lane in Mitcham with the aim of increasing the number of bee friendly plants in a bid to help boost the dwindling population.

The project has been carried out as part of the Friends of the Earth’s national Bee Cause campaign to help save the British bee with the help of Merton Council, the 5th Morden Beaver Group, Merton’s voluntary tree warden group and FM Conway Ltd.

Auriel Glanville, Merton’s Friends of the Earth co-ordinator, said: "In the UK, we’ve lost 97 per cent of our important natural grasslands and this is one of the biggest contributors to the alarming decline of our bee populations, and without bees the whole food chain is under threat.

"I’m delighted that Merton is supporting our Bee Cause campaign by creating these lovely Bee Worlds."

As part of the project, local beekeeper and pollen enthusiast, Norman Chapman, also gave the beaver group an educational talk about bees.
