Plans for a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge across the Thames have moved a step closer following the submission of a planning application to Fulham and Hammersmith Council.

Architectural company One World Design has applied to build a 18.4m high and 170m-long bridge linking Fulham to Battersea.

The site on the Fulham side is thought to be at the precise spot where the Queen boarded the royal barge during the diamond jubilee celebrations last year.

It would run parallel to the existing Grade II-listed Battersea railway bridge, in Lombard Road, which links to Clapham Junction station.

English Heritage initially objected to the scheme on the grounds that it was attached to the railway bridge, but this has now been modified by the applicant.

In June, Wandsworth Council gave the green light to the £22m structure, which would be London's first new bridge over the Thames in a decade.

The council’s own financial appraisal of the proposal concluded that it would pay for itself twice over, inside 15 years.

This would be possible by offering investors the opportunity to put their name on the bridge, in a similar way to the Barclays Cycle Hire, the 02 arena and the Emirates stadium.

A consultation on the new plans is now open and residents can contact the council with their comments on the plans until July 31.
