An 89-year-old woman was taken to hospital with a damaged spine after her car flipped in Cheam yesterday.
The woman sustained a broken vertebrae in the incident in Shirley Avenue at about 10.15am. Neighbours say it is not clear how the crash happened but no one else was involved.
Firefighters rescued the woman who was trapped inside the silver Nissan. She was breathing and conscious and was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting for treatment to a facial injury. X-rays revealed damage to her spine.
Neighbour Susie Elsley said: "Nobody knows what happened.
"What I can say is that I heard a bang but I thought it was an upstairs door slamming.
"My husband looked out of the window and saw people running so I shot out.
"No-one saw what happened. She could have swerved to avoid a parked car or there was an angry looking cat around so maybe she had to avoid that.
"The camber on the road here is atrocious, that may have something to do with it."
