Progress has been made on a number of key points highlighted by the riot review panel.

A number of recommendations were made to the council and police in Croydon, following the disorder in August 2011.

Proposals suggested to Croydon Council included local agencies planning ahead for the summer holiday periods.

This has resulted in a new youth centre opening on the Handcroft Road estate in West Croydon and youth services and housing departments partnering up to provide a wide range of activities during the summer holidays.

Other suggestions included Croydon Council looking at methods to improve the way it gathered and assessed information posted on social networking sites, such as Twitter and Facebook.

The Safer Croydon Partnership that aims to cut crime and disorder and re-offending, now routinely monitors social media websites to look for intelligence.

The council and police were asked to assess communication strategies during large-scale incidents and the council said its contact lists had been updated.

The police said processes were in place to ensure key parties could be updated during critical incidents. Other recommendations for police included reviewing stop and search processes and looking at ways to rebuild the community’s trust.

According to a recent public attitude survey, confidence in police was improving, rising from 59 per cent in 2011-12 to 62 per cent in 2012-13.

The panel’s review also called on police to look at their presence in London Road and West Croydon, as well as having a new base in New Addington.

Croydon will benefit from 117 extra police officers and, while most of them will be part of safer neighbourhood teams (SNT), a good proportion will work in the north-west of the borough.

The SNT based in Central Parade, New Addington, will become a community contact point between 7pm and 8pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays and 2pm to 3pm Saturdays.
