A butcher is in danger of going out of business because of Transport for London (TfL) roadworks.

Steve McManus, who runs Surrey Premier Meats in Hook Parade, Hook, said he had lost 40 per cent of his business since the works began in March.

TfL’s plans will create extra road crossings and renovate the pavements at the parade.

Mr McManus said: “We are hanging on by the skin of our teeth. As soon as the works began footfall dropped right off.

“Who wants to sit in a big long line of traffic to go to the shops?

“They have not done anything to help us. I don’t think it is right that they should put little shops out of business just to use up their budget.”

Deputy mayor of Kingston Council Councillor Alan Dean said: “We have had a number of people talking to us about this issue and we are trying to get things moved on.

“I do totally sympathise with Steve and the other shopkeepers. It is very frustrating. They must be behind schedule.”

Colin Punch, chairman of the Chessington District Residents’ Association, said: “It just seems to be taking so long to do.

“The shop owners there are losing a packet.

“People can park there but because the site is going on, people drive past and think, ‘Oh, can I get in there?’”
