Travellers have descended on a Cheam park.

It is thought the group arrived at Seears Park last night, bringing with them about ten caravans and a variety of dog kennels.

One resident said: "It looks like they are staying, they've even brought their kennels. I walk my dog in there, but I won't be now."

Another noted the potentially problematic timing of their arrival.

She said: "With the bank holiday on Monday, the council are going to take even longer to get rid of them."

Councillor Jill Whitehead, chairwoman of the environment and neighbourhood committee said: "We became aware this morning (22 August) that a group of travellers have set up camp on Seears Park. We are already working to ensure they are moved on as quickly as possible while meeting our safeguarding, welfare and legal obligations.

"We understand how frustrating these incidents can be for residents, which is why we always make full use of our powers to remove illegally camped groups. The council is required to make provision and respond to the needs of the travelling community but we recognise that some traveller activities can cause concern to local residents.”
