A “wonderful son” committed suicide by suffocating himself with a plastic bag, an inquest heard.

Jay Petersen, a 32-year-old single accounts manager, was found dead by his stepfather at his home in Cheyne Court in Canning Road, on May 29, Croydon Coroner’s Court heard today.

The inquest, attended by his father and stepfather, heard Mr Petersen had little contact with medical services apart from a check up in 2010 and treatment for depression and a cyst in 2002.

Croydon Coroner Dr Roy Palmer said: “There was concern he had not been seen for several days. His stepfather went round and spoke to the landlord and was given access to the property and found him.

“There were some notes found addressed to family members that made clear he had been planning it for some time.”

Dr Palmer said he was satisfied there was nothing suspicious about his death and pathologist Dr Olaf Bierdrzycki described him as a “healthy young man” and gave the cause of death as plastic bag asphyxia.

Dr Roy Palmer concluded on the evidence that Mr Petersen meant to kill himself and recorded a verdict of suicide.

He added: “I’m sorry you lost your stepson in such sad circumstances with no explanation as to why.”

After the inquest Mr Peterson’s father Ben said: “He was a wonderful son and sadly missed. He will never be forgotten.”
