Two taekwondo teachers missed out on being named the world's most powerful couple, but triumphed in love after getting engaged.

Lisa Dennis and Chris Pitman of Dalmally Road, Addiscombe, hoped to break the Guinness World Record on August 19, by smashing 1,000 roof tiles each.

Mr Pitman grabbed the men's record destroying 1,000 tiles in just 51 seconds, shaving three seconds of the previous record holder's time.

His new fiancée, who was the first woman to ever attempt the challenge, narrowly missed out on her record after smashing the tiles in one minute 46 seconds, just 16 seconds shy of the 90 second target set by the world record authority.

But the couple were celebrating even before finding out the result of their challenge which was filmed by CBBC's Blue Peter, after Mr Pitman proposed.

Ms Dennis said: "When he asked me I told him not to joke around, but he wasn't. It was a fantastic day- absolutely unbelievable."

Ms Dennis has appealed Guinness World Record's decision not to give her a record for being the fastest woman to break 1,000 roof tiles, because she does not believe the target times takes into account that she had to smash stacks of eight, compared to Mr Pitman stacks of ten.

She said: "Guinness World Record are looking at the maths again. I tackled stacks of eight which meant I had to do 25 more stacks than Chris. It is such a shame, and is very disappointing.

"I put my body through something that I believe no other woman can do. If their decision stands I will do [the challenge] again before Christmas so watch this space."

Mr Pitman became involved in taekwondo after meeting Ms Dennis and said he was "really pleased" he was now a record holder.

He said: "I was always going to do it. I was only there to break the record, nothing else was an option. It is a shame about Lisa, it is absolutely remarkable a woman can do it, we will see if Guinness change their mind."

Speaking about the moment he proposed he added: "I was really nervous, I had been thinking about it for a while, it was an absolutely crazy day."
