A 10-year-old from Purley was named runner up in nationwide writing competition, beating thousands of children across the country.

Keirit Dosanjh entered The National Young Writer’s Award with the rest of her class from St David’s school.

Her short story about two children who could travel world through a book impressed judge Cressida Cowell, best-selling author of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ According to Keirit her favourite authors include Anthony Horowitz, Lauren St John and JK Rowling and her inspiration came from reading a lot of books.

Upon hearing the news Keirit said: "I’d thought they’d made a mistake."

While her mum Ravinder said: "I’ll be honest, she was just doing it herself. I think it’s a great idea. Her school is really encouraging."

After winning this award, she is now entering several other writing competitions aspiring to be an artist or a published writer in the future.

Keirit said: "I just like to write, and I quite like designing clothes as well."
