The opening hours of Sutton's libraries are being cut to save the council money.

Sutton Council says reducing opening hours at Sutton Central Library as well as libraries in Wallington, Cheam and Worcester Park will cause "minimal impact".

Sutton Central Library's closing time will go from 8pm to 6pm on Mondays and floors two to four will close on Thursday evenings. It will remain open until 8pm on other weekdays but closes at 5pm on Saturdays and 4.30pm on Sundays

Wallington Cheam and Worcester Park libraries will all close at 7pm rather than 8pm on Tuesdays. Tuesdays are the only night of the weekend when the libraries are open later than 5pm.

Councillor Jill Whitehead, chairwoman of the environment and neighbourhood committee, said: "We are extremely proud of our borough’s libraries.

"Each of them provides an important community hub where people can do everything from pay a bill to report a pothole.

"Borrowing books will always be part of our core service but libraries can do so much more.

"However, while we are striving to make the most of these important resources we are working in a very difficult financial climate.

"We believe we have worked out a way to save money with minimal impact on the services provided."
