A woman is hoping to mark her 50th birthday by raising enough money to dig a well in Africa.

Michelle Townsend, from Wimbledon, has embarked on a mission to raise £5,000 by the time she reaches her 50th birthday on March 18 so a borehole can be dug in Sudan to provide clean water.

The project will be carried out by the Barnabas fund which works to bring clean water and sanitation to poor countries worldwide.

The ballet teacher has already raised £675 through various fundraising events which have included giving private ballet lessons, and will next week be hosting a charity craft and food fair.

The event will be held on Friday, September 13, between 12.30 and 4.30pm at St Mary’s garden hall in Wimbledon Village.

Entry is £5 with gifts, food and crafts on offer as well as a raffle.
