Van drivers have been urged to be careful after a spate of break-ins over the weekend.

Five vans were targeted in a single night with the thieves taking tools worth hundreds of pounds in the attacks.

Two of the break-ins happened in Beddington Gardens, Wallington overnight between Saturday, September 7, and Sunday, September 8. Tools and a sat nav were taken from a one van and tools were taken from another. In both cases the locks to the vehicles had been forced open.

A further two break ins were reported in Dalmeny Road, Carshalton on the same night. Thieves smashed the windows on two vans and stole tools from one of them. The final break-in happened in Heathdene Road, Wallington. Nothing was taken.

Chief Inspector Nick Collins said the culprits were "clearly targeting vans for their tools" and encouraged owners to make sure they do not leave equipment in their vehicles. He also said police have stepped up patrols in affected areas and urged people to contact police if they see anyone acting in a suspect manner.
