VIDEO: Gavin Barwell MP starts charity walk for Croydon Visual
A Croydon MP walked the walk on Sunday as he started his charity ramble around his constituency boundary.
Gavin Barwell, MP for Croydon Central, walked five miles in aid of Croydon Visual, a charity which helps the blind and partially sighted in the borough.
The MP was forced to quit the walk due to illness, but will complete the remaining 13 miles on Thursday.
The walk started outside Addington High School and took other participants around 7.5 hours to complete.
Mr Barwell was joined by a number of other walkers including members from the charity Croydon Visual.
The Croydon Central MP said: “Despite the rain, I was joined by 18 people for my annual 18-mile charity walk around the borders of my constituents.
“The walk was completed in about 7 hours and along the way included some inspirational volunteers from Croydon Visual, a superb local charity supporting the blind and visually-impaired in the borough.
“I want to thank everyone who came along and everyone who has supported us to date. So far we’ve raised almost £2,500, a huge achievement for such a great local cause that makes this morning’s sore legs worth it.”
Councillor Tony Pearson who was walking in memory of Dean Chapman, a father of two who died in December 2012 from sudden adult death syndrome, also completed the walk.
Cllr Pearson has raised nearly £300 so far with the aim to raise at least £500 for the charity SADS UK.
Mr Chapman’s partner at the time, Danielle, said: “I am very grateful to Tony for doing this walk in honour of Dean.
“I think it's a great idea to raise awareness of SADS as it happens more than people realise and the more money raised the more research can be done and hopefully we can understand more about it.”
Cllr Pearson added: “The donation page will continue to run. I was lucky enough to be joined on part of the walk by my wife Maria and two of my grandchildren who, aged 6 and 5, walked two miles.
“I really want to thank everyone that has supported me and helped raise much needed funds, in Dean's name, for SADS UK.”
