Cheam is a step closer to being recognised as a postal town in its own right.
The Royal Mail plans to recognise the area as a town within Sutton borough meaning it will form a part of people's addresses.
Up to now Cheam has been seen as a part of Sutton meaning people inserting it into their addresses on post has been seen as redundant by the Royal Mail.
A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "Royal Mail will shortly be consulting with the residents of Cheam about inserting Cheam as a locality as part of the address.
"We have already sought the views of local opinion formers who have indicated they agree with the change.
"Now, residents in Cheam will be consulted and providing not more than 20 per cent disagree, the change will be made."
Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Burstow, who has campaigned for the change for many years, said the move will be a boost for the area and cut down on postal errors as Cheam is a unique place name in the UK, unlike Sutton.
Mr Burstow added: "After many years of campaigning I am extremely pleased that Cheam will finally be granted recognition as an official postal town.
"Cheam has a strong sense of community as well as its own identity and heritage. I am glad that this will finally be recognised by the Royal Mail.
"I would single out for special thanks Peter Mattey of the Belmont and South Cheam Residents Association, who has worked tirelessly to get the Royal Mail on board."
Mr Burstow, who lives in the area, collected thousands of names on a petition calling for the change as part of his Proud to be Cheam campaign.
