A covenant pledging support for the armed forces has been signed by Merton Council - three years after it was first introduced.

The Armed Forces Community Covenant is a voluntary statement which councils can sign in order to pledge support to the armed forces by the civilian community.

Merton has already amended its housing allocations scheme to give more priority for re-housing veterans, but the covenant will also encourage greater support for veterans in finding jobs, health support and help for the children of serving armed forces personnel in moving schools and admissions.

It can also lead to grants being awarded by the Ministry of Defence for projects which support the forces.

A ceremony, attended by Colonel Mike Kelly; the Leader of Merton Council, Councillor Stephen Alambritis; and the mayor of Merton, Councillor Krystal Miller, was held at the civic centre last Tuesday.
