Ghost hunting could become a pastime for visitors to Beddington Park as plans for a £3m redevelopment are drawn up.

A group led by the Friends of Beddington Park is putting together a list of ideas of improvements that could be made in the popular park as they put together a bid for cash from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Suggestions so far include setting up ghost tours to seek the spirit of Sir Walter Raleigh, which is said to haunt the park, as well as activities aimed at exploring the park historical links with the Romans and Henry VIII.

Neighbours of the park, walkers, cyclists, the police, the Wandle Trust, school children and archaeologists have already made their suggestions.

Councillor Jill Whitehead, chairwoman of the Sutton Council's environment and neighbourhood committee, said: "It is particularly inspiring that so many people have got involved in this project.

"Beddington Park is already a much-loved open space and it is quite clear that there are many people who care passionately about its future and are keen to have their views heard."

Other suggestions have included replanting fruit trees that were part of a garden designed by internationally famous Victorian scientist Alfred Smee, organising foraging activities and improving the park's waterways.

The group is bidding for £3m and part of the application involves the council having to pay 10 per cent of the overall cost meaning the cost to the council would be £300,000.

The bid must be submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund by February.
