A 17-year-old boy has died after being stabbed in Broad Green this afternoon.

The teenager was stabbed four times in Ockley Road and was rushed to hospital by air ambulance, where he later died.

Police and paramedics were called at about 2pm and there is still a cordon at the scene.

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the incident. He remains in police custody at a south London police station.

Police have launched a murder inquiry.

The victim has been named on social media this evening. Police have yet to confirm his next of kin have been informed of his death.

It is understood the stabbed teenager had been visiting a girl at a property in the road when he was fatally stabbed.

The teenager in custody is also understood to have been at the property at the time of the stabbing.

Dionne Smith, a friend of the family who live in the house, said: "They are just young boys, good kids. They are not involved in gangs at all.

"Their mum is in pieces. Could you imagine going back in the house where this has happened?"

Desmond Fitzgerald, 53, of nearby Franklin Way, saw paramedics battling to save the teenager.

He said: "I saw them working on him in the garden. They were doing CPR and two paramedics were holding a blanket to shield him from view.

"Another one was holding a drip. I knew from the way they were working on him that it wasn't looking good.

"You could see it was serious because there were that many police. It is shocking. People are all shocked. It is not the first time something has happened here but it is sad. It's a shame."

One neighbour, who did not wish to be named said: “It is very sad indeed. He is only a teenager, someone has lost their baby.

"It looks like they are still looking for someone else as there is a helicopter hovering around. Police have been taking evidence bags out of the house as well.

“One girl was taken away in a police car and she was in tears.”

Hazel Godfrey, 72, of Ockley Road, said: "The first thing I knew about it was hearing the ambulances.

"You do get trouble around here but you never expect this to happen on your own steet.

"It is unbelievable, the kind of thing you only think you'll see on TV. It is scary."

An Ockley Road resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "I know the people who live there, a bit. They seem perfectly nice and no trouble. I say hello when I see them. It is shocking."

Another neighbour, who lived across the road from where the stabbing happened,  said: "I just came home to find the road blocked off and heard someone had been stabbed. It is crazy."
