Gospel Choir IMDC nominated for MOBO award
Gospel singers who have performed with Stevie Wonder and Michael Buble have become the first choir nominated for a MOBO award.
The IDMC Choir, run and set up by John Fisher, of Thornton Heath, are coming up to their 20th anniversary and have been given the perfect early birthday present with their nomination for Best Gospel Act at the pretigious awards.
Croydon already has three nominations for the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards which include singer Lianne La Havas, rap duo Krept and Konan and African musician Frank Cobbinah.
Mr Fisher, who studied at Norbury Manor School and Stanley Tech - which is now a Harris Academy - set up the group in back in 1994.
The father of two, who is also a governor at St Andrew’s C of E School, includes singers from Croydon and a variety of other south London boroughs in his choir.
It is now a 25 piece choir after being trimmed down from its original size of 80 and it has been a constant tale of success for the group.
Mr Fisher and his choir have worked with a string of big names and performed with a few.
IDMC were invited to be guest artists at Luciano Pavarotti’s wedding, they have shared the stage with Stevie Wonder, sang at the weddings of footballer Kevin Nolan and R&B star Jamelia, and toured with Michael Buble and Jason Mraz.
The choir also runs a music festival called We Sing U Sing which takes place at Fairfield Halls and features a range of gospel music workshops for people to go along to.
Mr Fisher said: "We are the first gospel choir to be nominated at the MOBO awards which is a great honour.
"I have been following the awards since they started. It is very exciting and it was a complete shock when I got the call to say we have been put forward.
"If I am being honest it is just completely awesome to be nominated, it feels like we have won to be honest. We are MOBO nominees and that cannot be taken away from this.
"The choir are ecstatic. It is a great honour and I am very humbled by it."
