Bands gearing up for CROxjam festival
With over 100 acts playing across four days at ten different venues this year’s CROxjam festival is set to be bigger and better than ever, writes Andy Bloss.
Despite it being only the music festival’s second year it is already getting a reputation for showcasing some of the exciting up and coming talent in Croydon.
Starting on Thursday October 3 and going through to Sunday night the festival features gigs in ten venues with the music ranging from acoustic singer-songwriters to full-on hard-rock bands.
Run entirely by a small team of enthusiastic volunteers, CROxjam is part of the national Oxjam Festival which takes place across the UK throughout October and lays claim to being the biggest music festival in the UK.
Those interested in having a listen to some of the acts before choosing which ones to see can go to the CROxjam website for some samples.
Thursday night kicks off with a bluesy rock experience at The Green Dragon. Matthews Yard will be hosting a night of music from around the world and there will be a night of acoustic indie and folk music at The Oval.
On Friday Scream Lounge kicks into gear with a big rock night while the Green Dragon will be hosting a mix of bands from rock, to electric folk and then into heavy blues.
The Oval Tavern will also have a mixture of styles from some R&B, to traditional Irish tunes to Cajun folk music.
All the venues will have their doors open on Saturday for most of the day. Jazz, funk, rock, pop, indie, ska, punk and folk will all be featured.
Some venues will also be offering free entry during the afternoon with organisers saying it is worth getting down to Croydon in plenty of time.
CROxjam organiser John Bownas said: "Now the festival is under a week away I’m wishing I’d learnt from last year and planned everything a bit sooner.
"But actually this is part of the fun of an event like this one. Rushing around at the last minute making sure everyone knows what they have to do to make it all happen.
"I can’t thank everyone enough for the support they’ve given. Croydon is lucky to have so many amazing venues and great musicians and I know that the hundreds of people who I know will come along next week will have a great time."
