A music researcher is to run 10 miles to raise money for Diabetes UK after her daughter was diagnosed with the condition.

Emma Budgen of Dalmally Road, Addiscombe, is fundraising in honour of her daughter Stephanie, 15, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in June.

The 46-year-old who has participated in a range of fundraising events over the years, will do the Great South Run in Portsmouth on Sunday, October 27.

She hopes to raise money that will go towards fund awareness raising and research into Type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes develops when insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed.

This type accounts for about 10 per cent of all people with diabetes. It cannot be prevented and those with the condition have to take insulin several times a day to stay alive.

Ms Budgen said: "It was a shock to find my daughter’s tiredness and sudden weight loss were caused by diabetes.

"She already has an autistic spectrum disorder and is mildly learning disabled, so the news was a blow.

"But we have been strong and positive for her and encouraged her to get involved with raising awareness and fundraising too."
