For four years the heroism of the borough's own will be celebrated as Wandsworth prepares to mark 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War
August marks 100 years since the outbreak of the Great War and Wandsworth Council is working on a series of poignant events, exhibitions and tributes.
One of the wider aims will be to broaden schoolchildren's understanding of the war and the impact on Wandsworth's communities.
The commemoration will be launched on August 4 with the opening of a memorial garden, and creation of a number of commemorative benches and plaques bearing the names of recipients of the Victoria Cross and George Cross.
Events will follow the chronology of the war, starting with an exhibition about the immediate response in the borough to the outbreak of war and a Wandsworth Museum exhibition focusing on women at war, communications and recruitment.
A separate event at Rosslyn Park rugby club will be based on the book "The Final Whistle" following the poignant stories of fifteen men who fought side-by-side, on the rugby pitch and in the trenches .
In the autumn there will be a roll of honour at Emmanuel school and a World War One Open Housed themed event.
The Tara Arts theatre will showing The Half Moon Camp, a play focussing on the contribution of overseas soldiers from the British Empire while insight in to the 23rd Battalion, County of London Regiment (based in Clapham Junction), will be available.
Other exhibitions will focus on Prices Candle Factory, explaining how women took over production; poetry from Battersea' s Edward Thomas; art from Eric Kennington, official war artist and honoured in Battersea Park; the 3rd London General Hospital, based in the Royal Victoria Patriotic Building on Wandsworth Common; under-age soldiers and the introduction of allotments.
Finally there will be a general appeal for the public’s documentary memorabilia, such as photographs, for donation to the Heritage Service.
The commemoration will mirror the precise length of the war and further events are to be held up to 2018.
Exact details of later events have not been confirmed, but themes under consideration include the formation of the three borough battalions and the 100th anniversary of the Somme in 2016 where the 10th Queen's Battersea battalion fought at Delville Wood, France.
