The motorcyclist hurt in last night’s collision in Sandy Lane South has been described as stable.

Police said a car and motorcycle collided at 8pm in Sandy Lane South at the junction with Waterer Rise.

The collision caused traffic problems while the road was cordoned off until 1am because of oil on the road.

The motorcyclist, a man in his 20s, was taken to a south London hospital with serious injuries initially thought to be life threatening.

Colin Hillman, 44, from Wallington, drove past the scene just before 9am.

He said: "I don't think he was breathing for himself. I'm glad to hear he's pulled through.

"I didn't see anything other than lots of tubes and bottles of oxygen. The road was cordoned off and buses were diverted - four or five had to turn around.

"It is quite a bad junction and these things happen unfortunately."

The female car driver stopped at the scene and has not been arrested.

Sandy Lane South has been the scene of numerous traffic accidents in the past and residents have long been campaigning to have traffic calming measures such as traffic lights, or speed humps put in.

British boxing Champion Gary Mason was killed in January 2011 when he was knocked off his bike by a van as he turned in to Sandy Lane South.

Police enquiries are continuing.
