Former Croydon Mayor councillor Eddy Arram presented a cheque for more than £11,000 to the Croydon branch of the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen's Family Association (SSAFA).
The charity was one of two nominated by Coun Arran during his year in office as Mayor.
More than £23,000 was raised for the SSAFA and the Mayor's second chosen charity Multiple Sclerosis Croydon, who will be presented with a cheque later this month.
Coun Arram said: "I am pleased with the amount of money that we have raised due to the hard work of my committee and the chair of my committee my Mayoress Judith."
He said with the large sum the SSAFA would be able to deal with immediate crises in the Croydon area.
