CHARLTON midfielder Cameron Stewart claims his sensational volley on Saturday became irrelevant after the Addicks suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Leeds.
The hosts twice came from behind to level the game at a soggy Valley as they looked to extend the five-game unbeaten run which had seen Chris Powell nominated for the October manager of the month award.
But it was the Yorkshire club who came out on top thanks to Ross McCormack’s four-goal haul, despite Stewart smashing home the best strike of his career so far.
“I was really pleased with it to equalise at the time,” the on-loan Hull player said.
“It’s probably the best goal I’ve ever scored.
“But when you lose at the end, you can’t celebrate it as much.”
The lack of goals has been an issue for Powell’s side this season and they remain the joint second lowest scorers in the division.
Stewart acknowledges the only positive of the game was the fact they at least found the net twice for the first time since August 31.
However, the former Manchester United youngster acknowledged conceding four at home is simply not good enough.
“We got two goals, and we haven’t been doing that in games recently,” Stewart said.
“But we have kept clean sheets in games and today we have conceded four.
“I’m sure if you ask anybody they would have rather scored one and kept a clean sheet.
“It is a positive we have scored two goals, but we have conceded four and lost the game so it is about us pulling together and moving on to the next one.”
Once again the Valley pitch did not hold up after heavy rain and the kick-off was delayed by 30 minutes in order for the ground staff to work on it.
Stewart believes the pitch possibly helped Leeds and their style of play more than Charlton, but added the weather was still no excuse for such a lacklustre defensive display.
“It wasn’t ideal conditions at all but it was the same for both teams,” he said.
“Maybe today it suited them a little bit better than us, but you have to get on with it.
“Football can throw anything at you, so there is no point complaining about the pitch, but it wasn’t ideal conditions.”
