A teenage girl was sexually assaulted as she walked alone in a tunnel at 3am on Saturday.

The attack happened as the 17-year-old girl walked through the pedestrian tunnel under Epsom Downs Racecourse on Epsom Lane North, Epsom Downs, in the early hours of November 9.

It is believed a man grabbed the girl and tried to kiss her before she was able to break free and run away.

The girl had been socialising with friends in Epsom town centre earlier and had left the area after visiting the taxi rank near the clocktower.

She walked up Ashley Avenue, passed the graveyard, and headed towards the bandstand, before taking a right at the roundabout headed towards Tattenham Corner, where she went into the tunnel.

Her attacker is white, of medium build, 5ft 8in, and aged between 20 and 35. He was wearing a black hooded jumper, with the hood up, and black trousers.

Surrey Police Constable Gemma Taylor, said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim and I would appeal to anyone who has any information which may assist with the investigation to contact officers as a matter of urgency.

"It is unknown whether the victim was followed from Epsom town centre as she made her way home, or if the offender was loitering around the area of the Epsom Downs where the offence occurred, so anyone who saw anything suspicious along the route should share this information with us.

"I would also appeal to anyone who has their suspicions around someone they know who fits the description of the offender and cannot account for their whereabouts at the time of the offence to make contact with police."

Anyone with information should call the police on 101, quoting reference RB/13/9142, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
