Christmas is coming and nothing sparks the festive season into action like turning on the Christmas lights.

Tomorrow North End in Croydon will be lit up like a Christmas Tree as popular TV baddie Steve McFadden joins forces with the town’s mayor Councillor Yvette Hopley to turn on the lights.

McFadden, who is playing Captain Hook in this year’s Fairfield Halls pantomime, will also be joined by his fellow Peter Pan cast members.

The switch on, organised by Croydon Town Centre Business Improvement District (BID), will start at 6pm but there will be a whole host of activities taking place before then.

Roaming street performers including a roller skating Christmas pudding and stilt walkers will be mingling with crowds from 3pm.

From 4.30pm Covent Garden entertainer Ernest the Magnifico performs his daredeveil antics in North End featuring a high flying stunt car.

There will also be performances from the Endurance Steel Orchestra and a selection of dance groups.

Crystal Palace Football club are also holding their roadshow during the day. With the Crystals launching their new calendar in the Whitgift Centre.

Palace players will also be signing autographs in the lead up to the light switch on.

Matthew Sims, chief executive of Croydon BID, says: "Our Christmas lights switch-on event has rightly earned its place in Croydon’s calendar of must see events offering thrills and entertainment for all the family.

"We have a really strong programme this year added to which we are also delighted to be bringing back performers from the highly acclaimed Covent Garden Entertainment company.

"Our aim as ever is to put a smile on people’s faces and leave everyone with a positive, lasting, impression of the town."
