Patients waited too long to be seen at Kingston Hospital accident and emergency in 17 weeks of the last year.

The hospital reported on a government target which means 95 per cent of patients should be admitted, transferred, or discharged within four hours, for 50 weeks.

The figures were revealed in a London Assembly report.

Kingston's performance placed it fourth out of 22 London hospitals, with Chelsea and Westminster not missing a single week, and Barking, Havering and Redbridge missing all 52 it reported.

London Assembly member and health committee chairman Dr Onkar Sahota said: “This is extremely worrying and as the winter sets in, with increased costs for heating, we believe emergency health services will struggle even more and patients in need of urgent or emergency care will not be seen quickly enough.

“In the longer term, we also need a much clearer global plan for A&E service reforms across the capital."

Kingston Hospital tweeted: "We're in the top 4 in London for A&E perf in @LondonAssembly report and best in South London. Well done to our amazing staff"

NHS England said earlier this year the maximum four hour waiting time remained a key NHS commitment enshrined in the NHS Constitution.

Its support plan, published in March, said: "Long waiting times in A&E – often experienced by those awaiting admission and hence ill patients – not only deliver poor quality in terms of patient experience, they also compromise patient safety and reduce clinical effectiveness”.
