Westfield and Hammerson will put their redevelopment plans of the town centre to the council later this month.

Gavin Barwell, MP for Croydon Central said this morning that plans will go before the planning committee on November 25.

The £1 billion redevelopment is being earmarked as the catalyst for economic change in the borough.

The Whitgift Centre will be replaced with retail, leisure and residential facilities.

If planning is granted, the aim is to complete the redevelopment by winter 2017.

Mr Barwell said: “There is still a long way to go. If the scheme is given planning permission, as I hope, there may then need to be a Compulsory Purchase Order and then it’ll take several years to build.

“But we can have increasing confidence that the long term decline of our borough is now being reversed.”

A spokesman for the Croydon Partnership, the name given to the scheme, said: “We are pleased to have a confirmed date for the planning committee hearing.

“This represents an important milestone in the process of developing our transformational retail regeneration scheme in Croydon.”

Mr Barwell is holding a meeting to discuss the redevelopment of the town centre on November 20, 8pm in the Community Space at Bernard Weatherill House.
