Young people from schools in Merton have been praised for their achievements at an annual awards ceremony.

The Jack Petchey Foundation achievement awards were held at the Polka Theatre last month.

Sixty six young people from Merton collected awards and a £200 grant at the event which rewards children aged 11 to 25 for their achievements, having been nominated by their peers and leaders.

James Boyer, 14, from Wimbledon College, a charity fundraiser who works with a group of friends to organize raffles, quizzes and sponsored events, was just one of the evening’s winners.

His cash reward was used to buy a burger meal for his charity fundraiser friends and to purchase some leisure equipment for his church’s youth club.

The Jack Petchey Foundation was established in 1999 to recognise the contributions young people make to society and to support them in achieving their potential.

Councillor Krystal Miller, Mayor of Merton, said: "If you think you can, you can. "Jack Petchey’s mantra has certainly paid off for our Merton youth.

"A great evening helping to present awards and I am very proud of our young people."
