Mystery surrounds traffic problems at a notorious Sutton bottleneck.

Drivers and business owners in Rosehill are reporting an increase traffic snarl-ups at the Rosehill Roundabout but Transport for London (TfL), which controls the flow of cars through the roundabout's lights, says it has not changed anything although it has pledged to monitor the situation.

Tony Provenzano, chairman Rosehill Traders said the delays come and go but have regularly been causing problems for businesses in the area with people arriving late for work and clients missing appointments because of the problems at the roundabout that links St Helier Avenue, Rose Hill, Wrythe Lane and several other roads.

He said: "The traffic lights have been changed and it's a nightmare. They seem to give priority to traffic coming out of Sutton but there are problems at every single other entry point to the roundabout.

"I speak to a lot of people and I own a hair salon here and they all say it has become a nightmare.

"It's making my customers late and making my staff late. For some people it's making them 10, 20 minutes late. I'm sure that, for those coming from Sutton, it's fine. But for a lot of the people that live here or have businesses here it is terrible."

But TfL said it has changed nothing, although there was a day last month when some of its equipment for monitoring traffic on the roundabout failed but that has since been fixed.

A spokesman said it controls the roundabout using software monitors traffic every three seconds and changes the timings of the lights accordingly.

Alan Bristow, director of road space management at TfL, said "We recently corrected a technical issue at the Rose Hill roundabout which had caused an error with the traffic signals.

"We will keep this area under review to see if any future further improvements could be made."
