One of the country’s top composers will lead the Elmbridge Big Band in the run up to Christmas.

Bill Geldard will take hold of the baton after offering to rehearse and conduct the community big band, following the departure of the band’s former leader in the summer.

Mr Geldard became a professional musician at the age of 15 and was a founder member of the George Evans Orchestra, through which he featured in many big bands.

In the 1970s, Mr Geldard formed the Bill Geldard Tentette and the Bill Geldard Big Band and has been guest conductor of the BBC Radio Orchestra.

He has also recorded a number of instrumental music albums, which he composed and arranged for television and films.

Lewis McGuiness, deputy musical director of Elmbridge Big Band, said: “We are thrilled and excited to have such an iconic big band legend leading us in our Christmas concert.

“Bill will bring with him a wealth of big band experience from his days with the Ted Heath Orchestra, and we are particularly looking forward to his interpretation of our Christmas repertoire.”

Cliff van Tonder, founder of Surrey Music and Elmbridge Big Band, said the group were extremely grateful for Mr Geldard’s commitment to help.

He said: “Each and every member of the big band will benefit during the few weeks under his leadership, culminating in what will undoubtedly be an amazing concert in December.”

The Elmbridge Big Bands’ Christmas concert will take place at the Epsom Playhouse on December 7.
