Neighbours have expressed shock at the unexplained death of a 20-year-old woman in New Addington yesterday.

Police arrested a 33-year-old man following the young woman's death, which officers are treating as suspicious, in Dunsfold Way early yesterday morning.

Paramedics were called at around 8am to reports that the woman was in cardiac arrest.

They took her to a south London hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Several residents of Dunsfold Way yesterday said they believed the dead woman did not live on the road permanently.

It is understood a family with children are thought to live at the house where she was taken ill.

One neighbour said: "It is shocking, really sad. Things do happen in New Addington but we haven't had anything like this for a while round here. She was only 20."

Another added: "I can't believe it. That's crazy. I have seen the girl who died a few times. She didn't live there but visited a lot, going to parties and stuff."

Police are understood to have asked neighbours if they heard dogs that live at the house in question barking frantically at around 2am.

Following the 33-year-old's arrest, officers were seen searching and photographing a black car parked outside. Police later towed the car away.

Police are continuing their investigation and a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of the woman's death has not yet been carried out.
