The results are in, and O’Neills has won the best atmosphere prize as voted for by readers in the 2013 Kingston Best Bar None Awards.

Woody’s won best behind the bar, another prize voted on by readers, and both venues were among those presented with plaques at a glitzy event organised by Kingstonfirst packed with bar staff at the Hippodrome on Tuesday night.

The drop in crime as a result of partnership working was a theme of the evening.

Kingston is now the ‘safest’ borough with the lowest crime levels.

Mayor Boris Johnson’s deputy mayor for policing, Stephen Greenhalgh, used the event to suggest Kingston Council should pay for extra police officers in the town centre at weekends to tackle “unacceptably” high crime levels.

But Kingston Council leader Liz Green said: “If he believes Kingston needs more police officers on a Friday and Saturday then he needs to make sure the Met is funding them.”

The winners:

  • Best Behind the Bar – Woodys;
  • Best Atmosphere – O’Neills;
  • Best Pub - The Ram (runner-up, Druids Head);
  • Best Club - The Hippodrome (runner-up, McClusky’s);
  • Best Independent Venue – Acorn 20;
  • Best Staff Member - Simon Goodman, Bishop Out of Residence;
  • Best on the Door - McClusky’s;
  • Best Contribution to Night-time Economy - Kingston’s Street Pastors, volunteers who help to keep the town centre safe on Friday and Saturday nights.
