Oasis Academy Shirley Park came to the rescue of the rugby World Champions when their bus broke down.

The school's first ever competitive rugby team enjoyed a "behind closed doors" training session with the iconic New Zealand All Blacks on Tuesday, ahead of their clash with England tomorrow.

But at the end of the session the All Blacks' team coach broke down, so their squad piled into the academy's minibuses for the ride back to their hotel.

During the day the students were given an insight into how the champions train and were mentored by coaching staff on how to improve their game.

PE teachers Mr Norman and Mr Davis set up the academy's first ever competitive team last year and their hard work and efforts were rewarded with the training session.

Twenty students were able to see how to execute specific areas of the game including scrummages and lineouts and were given tips for both on and off the field - such as a professional player's diet and how specially designed GPS data vest technology works when analysing player performance.

One Year 11 student said: "It was interesting to see some of the things the All Blacks were doing we have done in training.

"It is just practice and the extra work they put in which separates them from the rest - it was truly inspiring."

Mr Davis said: "We've come so far already with this group of students who have transitioned from hardly knowing anything about the game, to playing competitively against local schools and beating them.

"Some of the lads are also playing for club sides so experiences like meeting the All Blacks will just motivate them more to push on with their rugby."
