Firefighters had to rescue a 75-year-old woman who was locked in a church yesterday afternoon.

Epsom firefighters helped the woman at the Epsom United Reformed Church near the fire station in Church Street, Epsom, at 1.20pm.

Alan Wood, webmaster at the church, said a social group had a meeting in one the rooms at the church in the afternoon.

Mr Wood said: "At the end of the meeting everybody left, the church was locked up and people went about their business.

"Apparently this lady was in the toilet and her presence there was not known by anybody and she did not know how to get out.

"I got a call from a member of the fire service. I don't know how he got to hear about this but he was outside the church talking to the lady inside."

Mr Wood said he suggested to the fireman that the lady could go upstairs and use the fire escape to get out.

He said: "It's a shame it happened. I'm sure people will take account of this and make sure it does not happen again."
