A woman has been found dead in central Croydon.

Police and paramedics were called to the basement flat in Tanfield Road just before 9am.

They found the woman dead on arrival.

London Ambulance Service sent a motorcycle responder, a responder in a car and one ambulance.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan police said officers were called to the scene by London Ambulance at 9.03am.

She said: "We were called to an address in Tanfield Road to reports of a deceased woman.

"Enquiries continue and officers remain at the scene."

The spokeswoman could not confirm whether the death was being treated as suspicious.

Ashley Weston, aged 30, who lives in the flat above, said: "I can't believe it.

"As far as I know there's just the one guy who lives there. He has lived there for a while, I think. He has a fair few parties.

"There was music playing downstairs when we went to bed last night but I wasn't aware of anything this morning."

A neighbour said: "My wife looked outside at about quarter past nine and saw an ambulance and a paramedic bike. Quite a lot of police arrived soon after."
