Plans to demolish and rebuilld a Streatham Islamic Centre into a larger "state-of-the-art" building have been met with opposition by residents.

A new planning application by South London Islamic Centre has been submitted to Lambeth Council for the Mitcham Lane site, which was formerly Streatham fire station.

A previous application was rejected in November and residents have until November 26 to comment on a new proposal for a larger building with six new flats for imams and three parking spaces.

Ian Swanson, Treasurer of Friends of Streatham Green, said: “We are not against the mosque but the size and scale of the site.

"Most of the residents around here will oppose it because of parking issues and crowding.”

Sandra Holmes, Streatham resident, commented: “Traffic congestion in that area is already horrific – adding extra traffic to this narrow stretch of road would be detrimental to what is already poor traffic flow.”

Another resident commented on the plan: “The development is architecturally unfitting, swamps local amenities and has been insufficiently studied for cultural and social impact on the area and the alternatives available.”
