A proposed Post Office closure has been labelled a "slap in the face" by Sutton's MP.

The St Nicholas Centre Post Office is being threatened with closure as bosses claim it is too expensive to run.

Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Burstow and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) have joined forces to fight to save the High Street site by organising a petition and raising awareness.

Mr Burstow said: "Local people who see queues coming out from the Post Office every weekend will be shocked to hear that keeping this branch open isn't affordable."

He called the Post Office a vital hub for the community used by people of all ages.
Ian Ward, CWU Postal Executive Council Member, said: "This is a slap in the face to people that work round the clock to help make the lives of everyone in Sutton easier."

"The Post Office must explain why they are closing this very busy branch and how they are planning to accommodate everyone who uses its services."

Legal requirements mean that the Post Office will have to go through a formal consultation process to decide its fate.
