Merton Council’s leisure and culture manager has won the national Public Servant of the Year award.

Christine Parsloe was awarded the accolade at an awards ceremony, hosted by the Guardian, on November 12.

The award is in recognition of her work in the borough over many years and in particular her efforts in bringing the London Olympic and Paralympic Games to Merton in 2012.

Her efforts resulted in 147,000 people lining the streets of Merton as the Olympic torch relay passed through last year.

She was also instrumental in arranging for the Queen to visit Mitcham during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Other projects overseen by Ms Parsloe include the building of a BMX track in Mitcham and two volleyball courts at Wimbledon Park.

Councillor Stephen Alambritis, leader of the council, said: "Christine truly deserves this award as she is a real public service champion and a fantastic ambassador for Merton Council and the local community.

"Thanks very much to everyone who voted and did their bit to make sure that Christine’s hard work is recognised."
