The mother of a cyclist who died after being hit by a bus in East Croydon has paid tribute to her "loving, gentle" son.

Roger William De Klerk of Vancouver Road, Forest Hill, died after the collision with a 410 bus in Addiscombe Road at the junction with Cherry Orchard Road, on Tuesday afternoon.

The 43-year-old was an IT consultant, who had recently left Harper Collins to start his own business and lived in Vancouver Road, Forest Hill.

His mother Ann De Klerk who also lives in Forest Hill said: "He was very loving, very caring and had a great sense of humour.

"[He was] a great strength of character and determination and was a very gentle person and safety was always uppermost in his mind.

"He first started riding a bicycle at school- he knew what he was doing."

A post-mortem examination has taken place and gave the cause of death as compression of the head, neck and chest. An inquest was opened and adjourned at Croydon Coroners Court on Thursday.

Mrs De Klerk, 71, plans to set up a memorial fund to improve cyclists' safety in her son's memory and called for improved signs and information for cyclist across London.

She said: "I think the signing needs to be improved. People need to know where they are meant to be.

"I don’t think that a tram, a bicycle and a bus should all be on one thing."

Detectives from the Road Death Investigation Unit based at Catford are investigating the crash. The bus stopped at the scene and the driver was not arrested.
