A Shirley sailor has been honoured by HRH the Princess Royal, who presented him with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Lifetime Commitment Award.

Robert Goldsmith received the award for his work with Sevenoaks-based Chipstead SC and the Heron Dinghy Class Association, at the annual RYA Volunteer Awards ceremony.

Mr Goldsmith first joined Chipstead SC with his family 37-years ago, and has been greatly supportive of all the club’s activities, including as club Treasurer since 2005, a role that has involved a substantial and ongoing workload, while he has always given his invaluable support to open meetings and social events.

He also adopted the Treasurer role for the Heron Dinghy Class Association in 1985, going on to become Chairman of the National Committee.

Mr Goldsmith said: "I love sailing because it offers different opportunities at all levels, from the enthusiast recording every race and result, to the ones just enjoying being on the water either on their own or racing for the finish with other class boats.

"This award has been earned as well by all the others, both on the water and on committees, who give their time and efforts to keep both The Heron Class Association and Chipstead SC afloat."
