A grant from the Royal Navy has enabled one of the oldest Sea Scout groups in Surrey to buy new equipment.

The 1st Molesey Jaguar Sea Scouts, one of 103 groups officially recognised by the Navy, used the grant to upgrade its safety boat and purchase new canoes.

The new narrow boats are lighter than the equipment previously used, making it easier for scouts to paddle, and have spray tops to help keep youngsters warm.

The group, whose members range from six to 18-years-old, hope to use the new equipment to introduce more young people to water activities and increase the number of opportunities scouting has to offer.

To help accommodate young people interested in the group, they are currently seeking adult volunteers, particularly a group treasurer.

Max Harvey, assistant scout leader, said: “We’re always looking for more help, it’s what enables us to provide such exciting opportunities to our young people.

“Perhaps you’d like to be a leader, instructor or helper behind the scenes. Some people do it to add to their CV, others do it to give something back to the community.”
