The zebra crossing outside Kingston Hospital where the Surrey Comet's June Sampson was hit was dangerous and poorly lit, a resident has claimed.

Kati Nezami said he had been meaning to write to Kingston Council about the crossing, before Tuesday evening's accident.

In an email to the council the Norbiton resident said: "An accident was bound to happen at this crossing as I have seen on many occasions people not being noticed or seen by drivers when dark.

"I sincerely hope the lady who was hit by a car is OK.

"It's remarkably silly and irresponsible to have such an ill lit crossing in front of a major hospital, and in between two bus stops on either side of the road."

He also criticised a lack of pedestrian lights at the junction between Coombe Lane and Galsworthy and Gloucester Roads.

June's condition was slightly improved yesterday afternoon, according to her family and medical staff.

The Kingston Hospital doctor who was driving the car which hit her on or near the crossing was due to be questioned by police about what happened.

Her family and husband Hilton have asked for any messages of support to be sent to letters@surreycomet.co.uk with the hope of reading them to her as they believe she may be able to hear them.
