Croydon's unsung heroes were honoured at an awards ceremony last night to recognise the borough's true champions.

About 150 people attended the Croydon Guardian's Croydon Champions awards ceremony at the Croydon Hilton hotel.

The awards, in their 12th year, aim to honour the bravery, selflessness and commitment of the people of Croydon.

The audience was made up of nominees, their friends and families, and some of the borough's dignitaries.

They were treated to performances from talented members of the Brit School, Ronnie Ley, Daniel Large and Ryan Green.

Speeches were given by deputy mayor of Croydon, Badsha Quadir, and Sarah Westman, from Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre, this year's supported charity.

Sarah made a moving speech, returning to the stage for the awards for the second year in a row, after the centre picked up Team of the Year in 2012.

A raffle was held on the night, with more than £200 raised for MS Therapy Centre Croydon.

Gavin Barwell, MP for Central Croydon, also spoke, paying tribute to the 30 finalists, and how inspiring the winners were.

Croydon Guardian assistant editor Matt Watts, said: "It was wonderful to be able to honour so many people who go above and beyond to make a difference to the lives of others in Croydon.

"Everyone who was nominated should be very proud of what they have achieved, and we had some amazing finalists."

"Across all the categories we have seen incredible people doing amazing things for the borough."
