Roller Derby team to wreck the halls in festive event for homeless charity
Croydon Roller Derby team will be wrecking the halls this Sunday as they help improve the festive season for the homeless in a special Christmas event.
Riot Squad- Croydon Roller Derby's A-team- will host 13 teams from across the country in a Christmas-themed tournament on Sunday December 1 at Carshalton’s Westcroft Leisure Centre.
They are encouraging donations of clean blankets, sleeping bags, toiletries and tins of canned food from all who attend to Croydon’s NightWatch.
The tournament will include three bouts of the contact sport which sees teams roller skating around a track attempting to lap members of the other side.
The Riot Squad are hoping to maintain a winning streak, having lost only once this season to a team from Toulouse in France.
Their newly formed B team, Vice Squad, will also be competing and are unbeaten having formed recently of new skaters who began skating only six months ago.
Lily Rae from the team said: "Roller derby is experiencing a boom in popularity in the UK and Croydon, ranked 33rd in Europe, is a fantastic league to get involved with."
She added: "The real focus of the event, though, is not the skating, it is the support of Croydon NightWatch."
Volunteers from NightWatch provide essentials such as food and clothing every night of the year, and help them find shelter and jobs.
The event will also include a licensed bar and stalls selling roller derby merchandise and home-made Christmas gifts.
Tickets are £6.50 in advance at http://croydonrollerderby.co.uk/latest-event/ or £7.50 on the door.
