You can make your mark on the borough by planting a tree in a park and keeping the area green for years to come.

Sutton Council is calling on people to help plant 90 new trees in Cheam Recreation Ground on Saturday, December 7.

Holes for the trees have already been dug along the western boundary with Nonsuch Park and now the council wants families to come forward to plant the saplings and put in supporting stakes.

Coun Mary Burstow said: "Tree planting is an activity you can do at any age. It is lovely to see young children come along with their plastic trowels, helping mum and dad plant the tree then shovel the compost back into the hole and stamp it down. In 20 years time you can come back to the woodland and say 'I planted that tree'.

"If people would like to join us, they should come to the playground in Cheam Recreation ground and follow the signs, to the border with Nonsuch Park.  We look forward to seeing as many people as possible."

The tree planting takes place from 10am onwards and is part of a plan to increase tree coverage in London by 25 per cent by 2025.
