Croydon Council has been awarded the Energy Saving Trust's Business Mileage Management Fleet Hero award after reducing employee business mileage saving taxpayers over £500,000.
The council were also awarded second place in the innovation category following the introduction of a pool of vehicles arranged through a contract with Zipcar.
Judges praised the council's commitment to cutting business mileage by helping employees commute more sustainably.
Councillor Sara Bashford, cabinet member for corporate and voluntary services, said: "This award is great recognition for the work of our transport team and for the green commitment shown by members of staff who have found the benefits of getting out of their cars whenever possible.
"Not only have they made a contribution to helping the council meet its carbon reduction target but they have saved local taxpayers over half a million pounds."
