Fundraisers were left disappointed last week after a charity abseil had to be cancelled due to a faulty rope.

Large groups were left waiting at the soon to be demolished Taberner House to take part in the Croydon Commitment event.

Plans to descend the 19 storey building had to be called off after Over the Edge Adventures, the company who was organising the abseil, decided one of the ropes used by jumpers was damaged.

Croydon Commitment is now arranging for as many of the original abseilers as possible to take part this week but has pledged to return registration fees and sponsorship from anyone unable to do so.

Fiona Smout, business manager of Croydon Commitment, said: “We were all so excited by the day, the weather was ideal and we had the maximum number ready to go.

“Many of them were council employees who had worked in that building, some of them were in festive fancy dress. There was an incredible buzz.

“Unfortunately, we eventually had no choice but to postpone the event but we are rescheduling for next Friday when we hope as many of the participants as possible will be available to take part.

“We understand people’s disappointment but safety has to come first. I was grateful for how incredibly patient people were throughout the day, and impressed by how committed they were to holding out for the abseil to happen.”

Anyone wishing to take part in the jump on Friday, December 13 should email admin@croydoncommitment.org.uk.
